 2017 Preview

Central completed the 2016 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Central just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 3A region three with a 3-3 region record.

The Cougars improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2007. The 364 points scored by the Cougars last year were a team record in a single season. The Cougars last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Central had a very good offense last year, scoring 36.4 points per game, but it couldn't keep up with a defense that gave up 35.7 points per game.

Since 2010, the Central football program has struggled with a record of 19-52.

Over the past 25 seasons, Central has not won much with a record of 76-188. Their 29.0% winning percentage ranks 54th in Class 3A and 346th in the AHSAA.

Barry Simmons leaves Central after just two seasons with a 10-11 record. He has accepted a job on the staff at Ashville.

Shane Rary served as the offensive coordinator for the Cougers before taking over when Coach Simkmons left in July.

The Central Cougars will play in Class 3A region three during the 2017 season.

The Cougars will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region three this season. Central came up short of the playoffs last year but are optimistic of a return to the post season this year.

The defense returns Senior DB Michael Jones who registered 6.5 sacks for 31 yards in losses last season.

The Cougars open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Catholic Montgomery on Friday, August 25 at Central Stadium. Last year the Catholic Montgomery Knights finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 4A region two. The Knights lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Thomasville by a score of 20-6.

Central and Catholic Montgomery have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 0-2-0 record against the Knights. They last met in 2016 with Catholic Montgomery winning by a score of 50-28.
